Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

4 February 2019

How did the concept of love evolve? How did love enter the stream of consciousness and become an integral part of the human experience? A lot of human sciences like psychology and anthropology have attempted to determine how love entered into our lives. But love is not an invention but a natural instinct that evolved to enable humans to further their race and care for their offspring. This emotion that suddenly evolved then got a name. The word love goes back to the very roots of the English language. It originates from the Middle English word luf, derived from the Old English word "lufu." This is similar to Old High German, "luba," and another Old English word, lēof, which means 'dear'. There are many other words that are related to love that have evolved from the Romans, Greeks etc. but all of them come from the roots relating to dear, pleasing and cherish, which definitely hints at a deeper more transcendent meaning of the modern day word.

So what does love mean? According to the first definition given in the dictionary, it means "an intense feeling of deep affection." In other words, love is what one feels. This simple word is so powerful that it binds the universe. It is an emotion that is the central to all relationships and our very existence. A simple phrase like, "I love you" can bring a smile or a tear in the eyes of your loved ones and form a bond for ages to come.

Beyond words, love finds expression through touch, actions and most importantly through gifts. Gifting in love has emerged as a means to show your near and dear ones how much you love them. Gifting is a renowned tradition especially on Valentine's Day.

To the uninitiated, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as St. Valentine's Day in the 5th Century. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine's Day should be a day for romance.
