GMR Group is a Bangalore headquartered global
infrastructure major with interests in Agri-business Airports,
Energy, Highways and Urban Infrastructure (including SEZ). Founded
in 1978, by its Chairman G.M. Rao, the Group has grown into a well
diversified and professionally managed organisation. Employing the
public-private partnership model, the Group has successfully
implemented several infrastructure projects and is in the process of
developing several others, both in India and abroad.
The Group has three operational power plants and eight plants which
are under various stages of development. In its highways business,
of the eight road projects, six are operational and two are under
development.
The Group is responsible for the development and management of the
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad and the Indira
Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. The Hyderabad International
Airport built by the Group along with its consortium partners, is
the country’s first Greenfield airport, which commenced operations
on March 23, 2008. The Group is also modernizing the IGI Airport in
time for the Commonwealth games in 2010.
The Group has also ventured into the area of Sports by promoting the
Indian Premier League team cricket team – ‘Delhi Daredevils.’
Through this initiative, it is committed to promote the popular
sport of cricket at the grass-root level.
After having established its credentials as a leading infrastructure
company within the country, the Group is now looking at expanding
its business globally. It’s first global venture involves building,
and operating the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Istanbul,
Turkey for a period of 20 years, along with its consortium partners
which was inaugurated on 31st October, 2009. The Group has also
acquired 50% stake in Intergen – a leading global power generation
utility. Further, it has also acquired Intergen’s 100% controlling
stake in Island Power, a Singapore based global energy utility. It’s
international forays are managed through a separate division – ‘The
International Business Division (IBD)’ which is headquartered in
London.
The Group is also active in the area of Corporate Social
Responsibility through its CSR arm, the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation.
The Foundation’s mandate is to develop social infrastructure and
enhance the quality of life of communities around the business
operations at all the locations. It focuses broadly on education;
health; hygiene and sanitation; empowerment and livelihoods; and
community development. Today, the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation has a
presence across 15 locations in India |
